This answer is layered. First and foremost, the safety component must be acknowledged. My home is a safe, controlled environment where I have access to my tutoring resources, technology, food and beverages, and family in close proximity. Second, I am a bit loud. I have tutored previously at local libraries and have found that my impassioned style of teaching and discussing literature, especially, is not suited to a quiet environment. Please do not misunderstand: I do not yell or shout; however, I do emote and my passion for the topics I teach cannot be stifled, nor will I permit it to be. Finally, asking for help is hard for most people and especially for teens. Seeking tutoring is a brave choice, and holding lessons in my home versus a more formal, institutional space, can help put students at ease. It removes some of the pressure and stigma of learning in a non-traditional manner.
Please note: There are two dogs - Sheepadoodles (non-shedding) - and four cats (rescued; domestic short-hair) in our home. While the dogs can be moved to my parents’ home next door during tutoring lessons, that will not be possible with the cats. If you have any allergy concerns, please disclose them prior to our initial consultation, so that we may discuss alternative arrangements.
I would encourage open communication about why your child is uninterested in tutoring services, as well as having an initial consultation with me. If after we have sat down and reviewed what to expect, your child is still unwilling to engage in tutoring, I will not accept them as a client. It is not my intention to subject anyone to assistance they are not interested in receiving, and in full transparency, I believe refusal to help oneself may require greater interventions than I am qualified to offer.
This quote may better convey the thinking behind my policy:
“If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.”
